Walking into a new church for the first time takes courage. Here's what usually happens, so there are no surprises.
Before you go
Check the church's ChurchList page for gathering times, parking and the "What to expect" section. If you have questions — about children, accessibility, or anything else — send them a message. Arriving 10 minutes early gives you time to find a seat and get your bearings.
What should I wear?
In most UK churches today, whatever you're comfortable in is fine. Some traditional churches are a little smarter, but nobody will turn you away. Many profiles on ChurchList show the dress code.
What happens in a service?
Most services last around 60–90 minutes and include:
- Sung worship — anything from hymns with an organ to a full band.
- Prayers — sometimes led from the front, sometimes in silence.
- Bible readings and a talk (sermon) — usually 20–40 minutes.
- Communion — in many churches, bread and wine are shared. If you're unsure whether to take part, it's fine to stay seated or ask for a blessing.
Children
Many churches run groups for children during part of the service, and some have a crèche. Look for the Kids' ministry or Crèche badges on church profiles.
Afterwards
Stay for a drink if you can. People are often keen to say hello — and it's the best way to get a feel for the community.
Will I be put on the spot?
Almost never. You won't be asked to speak, give money or join anything. Most churches simply want you to feel welcome.
