Church denominations explained: a plain-English guide for the UK
Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, Catholic… what's actually the difference? A short, friendly guide to the main Christian traditions in Britain.
The ChurchList team · 10 October 2026
Walk down almost any UK high street and you'll pass churches with very different names. Here's a friendly overview of the main traditions you'll find on ChurchList.
Anglican and Church of England
The established church in England, with a parish church serving every community. Services often follow a set liturgy from the Book of Common Prayer or Common Worship, though styles range from traditional choral evensong to contemporary worship. Find Anglican churches.
Catholic
The Roman Catholic Church is the largest Christian tradition worldwide. Worship centres on the Mass, with the sacraments at the heart of church life. Find Catholic churches.
Baptist
Baptists emphasise believer's baptism (baptising people who choose to follow Jesus, usually by full immersion), the authority of the Bible and congregational decision-making. Find Baptist churches.
Methodist
Born out of John Wesley's 18th-century revival, Methodism combines warm-hearted faith with a strong commitment to social justice and community action. Find Methodist churches.
Pentecostal and Charismatic
Pentecostal churches (including Elim and Assemblies of God) emphasise the work of the Holy Spirit, with lively, contemporary worship and prayer. Many churches in other denominations also describe themselves as charismatic. Find Pentecostal churches.
Evangelical and Non-denominational
"Evangelical" describes a Bible-centred approach found across many denominations. Non-denominational and independent churches — including networks like Vineyard and Newfrontiers — focus on Jesus without belonging to a historic denomination.
Orthodox
Ancient liturgy, icons and rich tradition from the Eastern Church — Greek, Russian, Romanian, Coptic and more. Find Orthodox churches.
Which is right for me?
The label on the door matters less than the community inside. Visit, ask questions, and look for a church where Jesus is central, the Bible is taught and people genuinely care for one another. Browse all denominations.
