How to find a church near you (and know it's the right one)

Looking for a church can feel daunting, especially if you've just moved, are returning to faith, or are exploring Christianity for the first time. The good news: there's almost certainly a welcoming church closer than you think.

Start with what matters to you

Before you search, jot down two or three things that matter most. Common ones include:

• Location — a church you can walk or drive to easily is one you'll keep going to.
• Tradition — liturgical and sacramental (Anglican, Catholic, Orthodox), or informal and contemporary (many Evangelical, Pentecostal and independent churches).
• Children and youth — if you have kids, a thriving kids' ministry makes Sundays much easier.
• Size — some people love the buzz of a large church; others prefer a small congregation where everyone knows your name.

Search by location and filter

Your first visit tells you a little; your third tells you a lot. Try a few churches over a month or two. Stay for the coffee afterwards — that's where you get a real feel for the community.

Ask questions

It's completely normal to ask the leader what the church believes, how decisions are made, or how you can get involved. A healthy church will be happy to talk.
